How it all started...

It all began with our CEO, Dr. Hibah Shata, a mother of 3 and a dentist by profession. Dr. Hibah grew up in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and moved to the United Kingdom to study pursue a master’s degree and obtain her fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. She worked in the government health sector in a number of hospitals as a consultant in dental medicine and surgery. In 2000, Dr. Hibah moved to Dubai with her husband and like many expats in the city had to start build her life here from scratch.

In 2007, her daughter, Sarah, was diagnosed with autism at one-and-a-half-years of age. As Dr. Hibah learned from her own experiences with Sarah, Early intervention is the key to improving learning, communication, and social skills, as well as basic brain development. At the time of Sarah’s diagnosis, Dr. Hibah could not find any diagnostic or early intervention services for her in Dubai, especially for her treatments at that young age. All she found were long waiting lists for a handful of specialists.

That is when she had to choose between moving to another country or finding a solution in Dubai. Having relocated from Saudi Arabia to the United Kingdom, and then Dubai, she realized that starting over would be very difficult. At the same time, Dr. Hibah saw an opportunity to fill a void in Dubai. She wanted to help Sarah and children like her.

That is when she started the first early intervention center for children facing autism in Dubai in 2008, and by 2010, her vision manifested into an institute for learning and enrichment to promote integration of children of determination within regular schools. And finally in 2017, Maharat Learning Center was launched with the first branch in Dubai. In 2019, Maharat Arabia Learning Center was launched in Riyadh and the second branch in the Kingdom was established in Jeddah in 2022.

As for the lovely Sarah, she is now 17 years old and attends a regular school. She speaks both Arabic and English and has built keen interests in several hobbies such as swimming and music. She also loves to draw and play the piano.

As Maharat continues to grow, we strive to continue spreading awareness about autism and provide training to develop parents and caregivers’ skills. We support schools to establish innovative classes to integrate all children into mainstream schools and the wider community. We seek community partnerships that contribute to building an cohesive, safe, and inclusive society.
